The is the catch phrase of our trainings: ‘And now, this is how it works in real life…’  You will hear it many times.

It is true that the European Union is complex. This is essentially the result of two factors.

One is that its workings are based on balances and compromises. If member States give the EU more power on a particular subject, they will immediately put in place a mechanism to ‘compensate’ for that, to keep control nevertheless. Yes, repeat no. As the EU increases its competences, it happens more and more. Hence the complexity.

The other factor is that, contrary to other systems based on a federal model, member States are reluctant to give the EU visible prominence over its components. Protagonism and communication remain mostly in the hands of the member States. The result is that even citizens of the European Union know very little about it and are at times confused by what they see happening.

We will do our utmost to shed light on these issues. We will do it in a way that will give you, beyond dry knowledge, a familiarity with the workings of the European Union. You will see the pieces moving in front of you.
